Service Description

Skippering a yacht for the first time is a challenging yet rewarding experience, and the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course is designed to help you take charge safely and confidently. This course goes beyond navigation, teaching you essential skills such as weather forecasting, passage planning, sail handling, pilotage, and ensuring the overall safety and wellbeing of your crew and yacht. Under the guidance of an experienced and patient instructor, you’ll skipper the yacht on short passages, focusing on boat handling and mooring in various conditions. Living aboard for the course, you’ll visit different harbours to practise pilotage techniques, including night sailing to experience night pilotage and identify lights. By the end, you’ll have the confidence to skipper a cruising yacht on short passages by day and earn your RYA Day Skipper Practical Certificate, opening the door to chartering opportunities. To enrol in the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course, you’ll need prior experience, including at least 5 days aboard a yacht, 100 miles logged, and 4 night hours of sailing. You should also have basic sailing skills to the level of RYA Competent Crew and a good understanding of navigation and theory equivalent to the RYA Day Skipper Theory course. This foundation ensures you’re ready to develop the skills and confidence to take charge as skipper.
