Service Description

The RYA Coastal Skipper Course is a great way for experienced Day Skippers to bridge the gap to full RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal examination. RYA Coastal Skipper builds the confidence and skills needed to undertake longer, more complex coastal and offshore passages, including night sailing and watch-keeping systems. With a focus on advanced navigation, seamanship, and leadership, you’ll learn to handle heavy weather, plan passages, manage watch systems, and navigate in limited visibility. Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, each student will plan and skipper coastal passages, gaining valuable practice in boat handling and mooring. Weather permitting, a longer coastal passage will test and refine your skills. Successful completion earns you the RYA Coastal Skipper Course Completion Certificate, equipping you to skipper coastal passages safely and confidently. To join the RYA Coastal Skipper Course, you’ll need prior sailing experience, including 15 days aboard, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles logged, and 8 night hours of sailing. You should also have sailing ability to the level of RYA Day Skipper and a solid understanding of navigation equivalent to the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory course. This experience ensures you’re ready to advance your skills and take on more challenging coastal and offshore passages.
